The Monash University Low FODMAP Certification Program

The team at Monash is very excited to be launching the Monash University Low FODMAP Certification Program

With thousands of products available in the supermarket, it is easy for consumers suffering irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and following a low FODMAP diet to feel confused & overwhelmed by choices. 

Alongside the Monash University Low FODMAP Diet app, the certification program is OUR way of helping YOU to easily identify appropriate food choices.

What is this Certification Program?
The Monash University Low FODMAP Certification program provides accreditation to food products that meet our low FODMAP & nutrient criteria. Certified food products will either be listed on our app and/or display our certified stamp on their food packaging. A list of the low FODMAP foods that have been certified by the program are available here.

This program also encourages food manufacturers to develop or reformulate their products to meet the low FODMAP criteria, which in turn means more variety in options for you!

Which products have your certified?

What does this stamp mean?
When you see our stamp on the supermarket shelves or see which branded products are certified on our app, we hope you will feel confident & at ease knowing that the product(s) has met our rigorous testing requirements & have the Monash University stamp of approval.

How do products qualify for this Program?
Only high quality, healthy products will be considered for this program. All products will undergo rigorous FODMAP testing in laboratories run by the Department of Gastroenterology at Monash University. They also must meet strict nutrient criteria for fat, saturated fat, sugar, salt and fibre which was developed by the Food Standards Agency in the United Kingdom. 

How will Monash ensure these certified Product(s) comply with your criteria?
All certified products will be subjected to random testing annually to ensure our strict standards are always complied with. Any products identified to not meet these criteria will be removed from the program.

Do companies pay to be part of this Certification Program?
Yes they do, funds will be used for:
  • Annual random audit testing of all certified products
  • Cover the costs for running this program
All remaining funds will go towards supporting further IBS & low FODMAP diet research.

  1. This is a great idea and will make it easier for us with fructose malabsorption to find safe foods

    1. We think the Monash Uni Low FODMAP Cert Prog will be a great thing for consumers with IBS too!

      Please note that Fructose malabsorption is only a problem if it triggers IBS- symptoms. Otherwise, fructose malabsorption is a normal phenomenon, affecting approx. 40% of pop’n.

      If you have medically diagnosed IBS you need to restrict the other FODMAPs (fructans, GOS and polyols) in your diet as well as excess fructose.

  2. Have you tested or will you be testing any sprouted grain breads?

    1. Hi,
      Yes we will be testing more breads and some will include sprouted grains as well. We also have a large app update coming soon, so look out for this.
